Cops and jocks battle for mental health

The area’s men in blue (quite literally as they donned borrowed Gaels hockey jerseys) took on the boys squad from GDHS last week in an entertaining and fun match that raised over $500 for the Canadian Mental Health Association.
For the OPP officers, it was an opportunity to show the kids another side of themselves. The police squad was bolstered by GD student Nic Vaillancourt in net and the presence of teacher Glen Campbell, a former Jr B Glens sniper.
The contest ended regulation tied 10-10 with the cops prevailing in a shootout. Vaillancourt was a rock in the OPP net, stopping all shots from his regular teammates.
Scoring for the boys during the game were Jacob “Go the Distance” Cameron with three, Lewis “Can’t Touch This” Keusch (2), Ben “Got the Flow” Poirier (2), Justin “Don’t Call Me Bieber” Poulter, Adam “Penalty Shot” Seguin, and Jordan “On Target” Sangster. Tyler “Pointman” Just had three assists.
Among the antics during the afternoon affair, OPP officer Joel Doiron found himself
honoured during the first intermission when he was
presented with a jelly doughnut in recognition of his
nickname.
Gaels goaltender Thomas MacDonald briefly drew the ire of Doiron who proceeded to handcuff the netminder to his net for a stretch – his offence, stealing too many saves.
The game, though, had a serious side too as most students from GDHS were out for the action at the Glengarry Sports Palace.
As part of the school’s year-long effort to raise awareness of mental health issues, each class of students was asked to raise $20 for the cause.
School principal Guy Lamarche notes that the school’s program is proving successful as more students feel comfortable opening up in discussing mental health.
